The Electrification Checklist Initiative
The 34th General Synod’s electrification resolution encourages UCC congregations and individual members to actively plan for and systematically implement electrifying the fossil-fueled activities of our lives. To further the implementation of this resolution, an initiative of the UCC’s Council for Climate Justice will make a concerted effort to utilize checklists to assess opportunities for congregations and households to replace fossil-fueled equipment, appliances, and
machines with electric ones. A preliminary outline of the checklists covers the electrification of heating, cooling, cooking, and more.
Two checklists will be utilized: one for churches and one for member households. Conference and association teams can conduct outreach to churches with the goal of having at least 50% of the churches in one’s region completing the checklist. Congregational green teams can utilize the church checklist while also disseminating the household checklist to members.
In addition to disseminating and utilizing checklists, conference and association teams can provide churches and members with up-to-date information about state-level legislation as well as how Inflation Reduction Act benefits related to electrification can be accessed in their state.
Volunteers for a national electrification task force of the Council for Climate Justice are also being sought to work on coordinating and furthering electrification across the settings of the United Church of Christ.
Let us know of your interest by filling out this form created to identify support for three 2024 initiatives of the Council for Climate Justice. Other initiatives include the Freedom from Plastics initiative and the Vote for Climate Hope campaign. A commissioning service for volunteers and ministry teams aligned with these three initiatives will take place at 1 pm ET on January 3, 2024.
